Attack the Block (Movie Review)

This movie has been out a while.  It was loved in Europe, made its rounds around the film festivals and then finally opened in 5 or 6 cities in the US last month.  I finally got a chance to see it a few weeks ago.

In short…this movie is about gangsters VS. aliens.  I wasn’t sure what to expect from this movie.

First things first….this movie is right around the 1 hour/30 minute mark….which makes it perfect.  I’m surprised they didn’t release this movie on a wider scale across the states.

This movie did a really good job of connecting characters together without making the audience deal with a lot of “fluff”.  There really isn’t a lot of unnecessary 20 minute “let’s build a story” scenes.  It manages to give you all the information that you need through the action.  It was interesting hearing hip hop tracks as part of the score from across the pond too.

The aliens?  They were even cool.  They weren’t exactly aliens that you would expect.  They were these large gorilla-ish, black dog looking things with one intriguing feature (that I won’t give away).

The outcome?  The outcome was even awesome.  It isn’t one of those alien movies where: Insert script here:

Human 1: Ahhh.  The aliens are coming.

Human 2: Ahhh.  The aliens are here.

*Humans die*

*Weak spot on alien ship/aliens found*

*Humans destroy aliens*

It’s not a movie like that at all.  The 2nd time through I noticed some foreshadowing near the beginning with what the alien “weakness” actually is.  In my opinion, it definitely wasn’t cheesy on the “weakness” front.

Lastly, definitely see this movie.  If you have a chance to see it in theaters, then do so.  If not, then get it on DVD.  This is the perfect example of a movie that can be a good, clean, fun ride on a low budget.
